When the Internet of Things (IoT) was first introduced to the world, there was much debate about how effective or even necessary, it would be. But recent years have firmly cemented IoT as a force to be reckoned with. And the next target in the IoT line of sight is BIM design!
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of a wide variety of devices, connected through the internet. Even devices, vehicles or appliances with no internet capabilities can be made part of the network, by embedding them with tech that allows access to the internet.
By connecting these two modern technological advancements – BIM implementations and IoT, BIM service providers can effectively create smart structures capable of previously unthinkable feats!

The reason why IoT enabled structures is labeled ‘smart’, is that they are capable of mimicking human thinking. These allow BIM service providers to create environmentally friendly, green building designs. Not convinced? Let’s look at the example of a hotel room, fully imbued with IoT sensors across all devices.
Such a room would be able to determine when systems are no longer in use, shutting down lights, air conditioning, TVs, etc. Moreover, these rooms could sense outside light and automatically adjust lighting. This would similarly work for water fixtures too! Imagine the electricity, water, and money this could save!
Part of the bigger picture
One of the largest waste elimination techniques available to BIM construction services is the use of pre-made parts. But this is much easier said than done. Using such components is a huge statistical and pragmatic inconvenience. However, if all these parts were individually tagged with IoT sensors, they could effectively be tracked in real time, as well as assembled with the greatest of ease during installation!
Break it down!
IoT makes it possible to monitor the status of machinery and heavy equipment, and to keep track of maintenance schedules. While this may not seem like a very major benefit, it pays off by preventing costly breakdowns during the construction process. Wouldn’t you rather be prepared, than have your entire work grind to a halt because of one mechanical failure?

When I think the internet, my mind immediately jumps to my smartphone! Similarly, implementing IoT devices in BIM construction services, opens up the possibilities of app-based tracking of field force, of thorough digital documentation and on the fly task assignments.

Accuracy of data collected from IoT devices is at an unequaled level of excellence. Human data collection is nowhere close! This richer data could mean more sophisticated BIM designs and reduced rates of human error!
